Guest Artists at the 74th AJC
With sponsorship from our strategic sponsor Destination NSW we are excited to announce the 74th AJC will host not one, but two guest artists: Marla Dixon and Shaye Cohn. This is the first time in almost 30 years that the AJC has hosted a guest.
Marla, who plays trumpet, is a full-time member of two bands based in New Orleans that tour across the USA and Europe: the Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band, an all-woman band, and the Shotgun Jazz Band, of which she is the leader. Both bands play Music for Good Times. Marla's uncommon and exuberant spirit, which comes through in both her trumpet playing and spectacular singing, is so forceful that she immediately dominates any context she appears in, not unlike Kid Thomas Valentine.
Shaye, who plays most instruments used in traditional jazz, will feature on piano and trumpet. Shaye is the nominal leader of Tuba Skinny, a New Orleans based band of international reputation for the novel presentation of early jazz with a street beat. Tuba Skinny toured Australia 7 years ago. She has recorded extensively with European jazz musicians both in the USA and when touring Europe.
Marla and Shaye, exclusive to the 74th AJC, will be programmed to perform with selected musicians across the week. If you don’t come to the 74th AJC then you will not get to hear two very talented jazz musicians in a unique setting.
